"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" - Benjamin Franklin

Perfect Puppy Programme

Here at St Roch’s, as dog behaviourists with a wealth of experience working with rescue dogs, we believe wholeheartedly that prevention is much better than cure.

We believe that if you would like a well-balanced and socialised dog that you can take anywhere and be proud of then it is worth the time, effort and investment in the best up to date, science based force free puppy training you can find ...you and your pup will reap the rewards later.

So why choose St Roch's Perfect Puppy Programme?

We can start you on the right path as soon as you get your new puppy in the comfort of your own home and the environment where your pup will spend the majority of his time. There is no need to wait until he has had his full vaccinations which means you don’t lose out on very important socialisation in your puppy’s "critical sensitive period".

What is the "critical sensitive period"?

All puppies have a " critical sensitive period " that starts from 4 weeks of age and ends around 12-16 weeks of age. Everything that your puppy experiences during this time will form their view of the world and have an effect on them for the rest of their lives. We will teach you and guide you how to socialise and habituate your puppy CORRECTLY during this crucial time. Puppies need to learn that all the things they will come across, both in the home and whilst out and about, are safe and nothing to be afraid of. Not learning to feel safe in their world puts them at risk of being frightened of certain things for the rest of their lives and can cause fear related aggression.

We can tailor your programme around you and your puppy and concentrate on any areas/exercises you may be having difficulties with and we can ensure that your puppy receives the best mental stimulation and enrichment that is appropriate to his breed and needs through games, toys and play.

We will focus on building a solid foundation for your puppy, giving them gentle experiences and exercises, that will enable them to cope with everyday life and give them the skills they need to make appropriate choices.

We will help your dog to be calm, polite, confident, resilient and sociable.

We will also help you to read your pups body language and understand what dogs are saying to each other and to us, so you and your puppy can build a solid relationship based on trust and understanding.

Our programme will give you 1 to 1 tuition and our undivided attention which means you are not competing with other puppies and their owners. You can stop and ask questions at any time and your pup can be more focused and learn much more without the distraction and excitement of other puppies.

We find that a "class room" environment can be too distracting and doesn’t emulate “real life" and so our programme will take place not only in your home but outside in the "real world" (subject to vaccinations). We aim to ensure our programme is tailor made to you and your puppy’s requirements.

We will cover important life skill plus much more such as:

  • Socialisation

Pre puppy buying/pre adoption rescue dog consultations

We all know the saying “A dog is for life not for Christmas“ and our pre puppy buying /pre adoption rescue dog consultations aim to help you and guide you to make the right choices.

A puppy/rescue dog is a huge commitment and will have a massive impact on your life so it is essential that you choose the right breed/puppy/dog that will integrate into your lifestyle and PREPARE and PLAN in advance for its arrival.

All puppies are cute but they can be extremely hard work, exhausting and time consuming. There are so many things to consider e.g. Can you handle the sleep deprivation? Toileting accidents on your carpet? Training commitments? The needs, innate behaviours and different energy levels of different breeds? Can you afford the long-term veterinary costs of vaccinations, worming, flea treatments and any unforeseen illnesses?, Are you prepared for household items being accidently chewed? How much time do you have to give to a puppy/dog with work commitments?, who will be responsible for walking the dog when it is cold or raining in winter? Do you understand the importance of buying from a reputable breeder and not from a backyard breeder or puppy farmer? Have you researched your chosen breed and understand what it was originally bred to do and how this has a huge impact on your dog’s physical and mental stimulation requirements? Do you have the space for your chosen breed when it is a fully-grown adult? Do you understand dog body language and how to communicate effectively with them? etc.

There is just so much and more to consider and we can help you get it right from the start and match the right puppy/breed/rescue dog that will fit into you and your family’s lifestyle. We want you to have a harmonious and fun relationship with your dog and have many happy years together. There are just so many dogs that end up unwanted or in rescue simply because the owners didn’t research and plan and chose the wrong puppy/dog for their lifestyle.

Pre Puppy buying/Pre adoption rescue dog consultations are £25.00.
